On Thursday Democratic Party flag bearers launched their campaigns to consolidate their grip in Entebbe Municipality, a constituency they grabbed from the National Resistance Movement during the 2011 elections. The flag bearers held a mammoth rally in Nakiwogo Zone to officially kick off their campaigns and for the next two months they will be traversing the Municipality and convincing the electorates in a bid to win all the elective posts come 2016. Among the candidates to watch is incumbent Mayor Vincent Kayanja DePaul who is seeking another mandate to man the municipality activities. Kayanja who has been credited for transforming the town into a garbage free municipality will be tussling it out with former LCIII Division B Chairman Joseph Ssesanga and FDC’s little known Miiro Kasozi. Other visible achievements that the Kayanja administration has been able to achieve include the construction and tarmacking of church Road and Basudde Rise. Solar powered street lights have been installed on the two roads. His two opponents will have to do a lot of ground work to unseat him because he has been able to win the hearts and minds of many.

Other than Kayanja, Michael Kakembo ‘Mbwatekamwa’ is perhaps the candidate in the Democratic Party who will be working tirelessly to clinch the highly coveted Parliamentary slot. Kakembo’s toughest opponent is NRM’s Rose Tumusiime who is a veteran politician with a strong personality that may give her the sympathy vote. Kakembo who is Mayor Kayanja’s political assistant has the vote hunting experience having joined politics two decades ago. In his brief address to his supporters Kakembo vowed to restore the debate on term limits in addition to legislating for civil servants including those in the armed forces. He promised to improve the standard of living of ordinary soldiers who fight on the frontline and stand a risk of losing their lives in battle.
Why should Soldiers and civil servants be left to suffer? Back in Amin’s regime Soldiers would get household commodities at cheaper prices. I’ll lobby for soldiers to enjoy a better standard of living. he said.
He also vowed to negotiate with Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to ensure that graduates who reside in Entebbe Municipality are given first priority in terms of employment opportunities. Kakembo also promised not to repeat Kawuma’s mistakes once he is elected to parliament.
Meanwhile Kayanja also rallied the electorate to vote Kakembo. Kayanja revealed that Hon. Kawuma has been at loggerheads with him and he isn’t ready to deal with conflicts in his second term.
DP in Entebbe hasn’t been scoring well because we have had a lot of differences. Hon.Kawuma tried to divide us but he failed so I appeal to you (electorate) to vote Kakembo because I’ll work well with him” Kayanja said.
