In a shocking late-night escalation of tension in Uganda, opposition leader Bobi Wine (Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu) has reported a violent raid on his residence in Magere. The assault, allegedly carried out by hundreds of soldiers from the Special Forces Command (SFC) and the UPDF, has left his wife, Barbie Kyagulanyi, hospitalized with severe physical and psychological trauma.
A Night of Terror in Magere
According to a statement shared by Bobi Wine, the raid began late last night when a massive deployment of soldiers—some in uniform and others in plain clothes—descended upon the family home. Eyewitness accounts and the leader’s statement suggest that many of the operatives appeared intoxicated as they used ladders to scale the property and hammers to smash through doors and windows.
“They broke our doors and forced themselves into our house. Using hammers, they hit walls, window glasses, and doors,” Bobi Wine stated, describing the “destruction everywhere” left by the security forces.
Assault on Barbie Kyagulanyi: Targeted Violence
The most disturbing details of the raid involve the targeted treatment of Bobi Wine’s wife, Barbie Kyagulanyi. According to the report, soldiers held her at gunpoint while demanding information on her husband’s whereabouts.
The ordeal allegedly escalated into physical violence and humiliation:
-
Physical Abuse: Soldiers reportedly strangled her when she refused to unlock her phone.
-
Gender-Based Violence: In a harrowing act of degradation, soldiers forcefully removed her blouse to take pictures.
-
Ethnic Insults: Wine claims the soldiers, speaking Runyakore, taunted her with ethnic slurs regarding her marriage.
Barbie Kyagulanyi is currently receiving medical attention as she deals with the aftermath of the assault.
Theft and Property Destruction
Beyond the physical attacks, the home was systematically looted. Bobi Wine reports that the soldiers entered every part of the house, including the ceiling, looking for a “basement” and the couple’s children.
The following items were reportedly stolen:
-
Electronics: Laptops, phones, chargers, and speakers.
-
Security Systems: The entire CCTV system and internet infrastructure.
-
Documents: Numerous valuable legal and personal documents.
-
Cash: Significant amounts of money were taken from the premises.
Staff and Family Under Fire
The violence was not limited to the Kyagulanyi family. The home’s security guard (askari) and house maid were also reportedly beaten during the search.
Despite the intensity of the raid and the trauma inflicted upon his family, Bobi Wine concluded his statement with a defiant message of resilience, stating that his resolve for a “Free Uganda” remains unshaken.
