Aviation Police (AVPOL) impounded 45 boxes containing ivory that was scheduled to be smuggled on Ethiopian Airlines to Singapore. AVPOL boss Lodovick Awita indicated that the operation took place on 4th July after they were tipped off by their snoops that some money hungry fellas were plotting to smuggle ivory via Entebbe Airport. The clever chaps first wrapped the ivory in sponge and sealed it in boxes and finally wrapped the boxes in grey polythene to disguise their “goods”. Awita revealed that the fellas dumped their “goods” at the Airport a couple of weeks ago and were still calculating and plotting to smuggle it on Ethiopian Airlines in the wee hours of the night without being detected. The boxes which were spotted unidentified with only ET Stickers and with no document were taken for screening. On screening Police discovered that it was ivory and not cow horns as had earlier been indicated. One person is currently under police custody at the Airport while the other fellas and the owners have disappeared with no trace. The weight of the boxes is yet to be established. We shall keep you posted for the lastest developments.
