

Describing his recent re-election as a victory from God, Mayor Kayanja Vincent DePaul officially started his second term in office after he was sworn in on Monday by the Entebbe Chief Magistrate Mary Kaitesi at a ceremony that was organized at the Mayor’s Garden. In his address, Mayor Kayanja hailed previous Municipal Council leaders for their contribution towards the development of Entebbe Municipality. He thanked the Divisional Chairmen and Municipal Council staff with whom he has had a healthy relationship in the previous term.
Key on his agenda in his second term includes constructing drainage systems for several areas around Entebbe, erecting and preserving historical monuments and sites in honour of several personalities who played a significant role in shaping the politics of Entebbe. Among some of the key personalities includes the Ignatius Musaazi who fought for the independence of Uganda in 1962, past colonial governors that used to reside in Entebbe, Israeli Prime Minister’s late brother Jonathan Netanyahu who was killed while commanding the raid on Entebbe to rescue the Israeli who were held hostage at Entebbe Airport by the Late Idi Amin Dada in 1976 and Entebbe Za Mugula in Kigungu where the name Entebbe derives its name.
Other key areas include tarmacking more roads, expanding the street lighting in several areas including business centers and constructing Kitooro Market into a modern market. Some of the key challenges that Mayor Kayanja pointed out include low pay for the Municipal Council Staff, increasing crime rate and residents who litter rubbish along the roads. He revealed that Municipal Council is planning to enact a law that will have all people caught littering rubbish along the roads pay a Shs50,000 fine.
Other challenges that Mayor Kayanja pointed out include rising unemployment levels, Alcohol and drug abuse, rising number of school drop outs and buildings that are being constructed in road reserves. Twenty councilors were also sworn in with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) having a total of 11 councilors and Democratic Party having a total of nine councilors. The swearing in ceremony was attended by several high profile guests including Hon. Rose Tumusiime, RDC Rose Kirabira, DPC Godfrey Ninsiima, Entebbe Miracle Center’s Pastor Aaron Mutebi and Buganda Kingdom Busiro County chief Eng. Kiberu Charles.
