Forum for Democratic change President Gen. Mugisha Muntu has described President Museveni as a very crafty opponent who has created fear among Ugandans who would want to actively participate in the change process.
Muntu who was appearing on NTV Premium talk show On the spot said that most Ugandans would rather sit on the side even as much as they would like to actively participate in the change process.
“We are dealing with a regime that is quite crafty and the situation we are operating in is a hostile environment” Muntu said.
Muntu added that quite a big chunk of the population want to see change but unfortunately have plunged into a state of hopelessness and almost a state of despair and frustration.
“Operating in such a hostile environment is not easy however for those of us who are leaders must avoid being destructed because of the pain, despair and frustration that the people are feeling. We must not be diverted from doing a number of things that are necessary for us to be able to change the current political situation and will help the people regain the hope that they have lost”, Muntu continued.
Muntu also refuted allegations that his non-aggressive leadership style has killed the party. “I hear many people saying that I’m not aggressive but I’m satisfied with the work that we have been doing in the party though it’s not visible” Muntu stressed.
Muntu added that the party is not just focused on regime change but also to change the governance culture in the country. “The issue isn’t just regime change but doing a lot of mobilization and organizational work which will create a firm foundation for us to be able to change the current political situation” he continued.
Muntu also revealed that the rift between President Museveni and Mbabazi is going to intensify further and further. “President Museveni has suppressed democratic debate in the NRM and now pressure is beginning to mount against him (Museveni)” he stressed.
Muntu added that the continued rift between him and Amama Mbabazi has exposed his vulnerability.
“President Museveni has made so many mistakes and this has created a state of contradictions and dissatisfaction both within the NRM and the general public” he revealed.
“I am certain that change is inevitable and we as the opposition must work hard to hold the country together when we finally capture power. We are in a very delicate situation and our efforts must be to avoid the country from disintegrating when Museveni goes” Muntu continued.
Muntu said that the idea of fronting a single candidate in 2016 is not a solution adding that the opposition should concentrate on doing organizational and mobilization work and building strength within the political parties which will raise hope and confidence in the people.
Muntu also lashed out at Ugandans who prefer to complain and don’t want to participate in the change process. He appealed to those who believe in the opposition to continue trusting them.
“We are going to roll out our party program very soon and this will help people to see visibly our efforts and mobilization work”, Muntu revealed.
“People may think that there’s nothing being done to change the current political circumstances and I clearly understand their argument but since independence Uganda’s political parties have been embroiled in fights over who becomes leader but FDC since 2012 when I took over leadership we have moved a long way in stabilizing the party” he continued.
On the financial challenges facing the party Muntu revealed that most political parties don’t have resources.
“There should be party financing in the current electoral laws but the government is very hostile and they are very slow in implementing the electoral reforms because they know that the opposition is becoming much stronger and better organized” Muntu stressed. .
