The leadership of Democratic Party (DP) and party councilors in Entebbe Municipality on Thursday protested against lifting the Presidential Age Limit saying parliamentarians should not tamper with the constitution in a bid to allow President Yoweri Museveni to cling to Power for life.
Led by Godfrey Maggwa Sali, the party spokesperson, and Michael Kakembo Mbwatekamwa, the Entebbe Municipality shadow Member of Parliament, the party stalwarts who convened at Entebbe Leisure park launched the campaign dubbed as “Kogikwatako enyingo 102(b) literally Meaning tampering with Article 102(b), its disastrous.
The angry party cadres say the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda Cap 7 Article 102(b) provides that, a person is not qualified for election as president unless he/she is not less than 35years or not more than 75years. On this note, they strongly warned President Yoweri Museveni and his NRM supporters to avoid tampering with the constitution arguing that any attempt to amend the constitution provision may cause political instability in the country.
They also strongly warned the Entebbe Municipality Legislator, Rose Tumusiime to disassociate herself from greedy members of parliament who are pestering President Museveni to amend the principle article that protects and favors only one individual(Yoweri Museveni). They
added that they want the legislator to come out in open and give her position on this subject matter before disaster strikes the country.
The disgruntled party members called upon legislators in the August House to aim at amending the entire constitution to enable them restore the presidential term limits, reforming electoral laws and reducing presidential powers, in addition to strengthening all the
state institutions among other ingredients that will usher in new constitutional order minus tampering with article 102(b) because it may end up creating life presidency.
They further say that for the past years Museveni promised to relinquish power in 2006 but instead he amended two presidential term limits and stood again in 2006 and the story has continued up to now.
