Renowned musician and songwriter Dokta Brain, real name Nkwanga Geoffrey, has opened up about a time he nearly lost his life over theft.
As a 16-year-old, Dokta Brain narrated to Ap. Nalebo of Faith Unfiltered, that he grew up in the ghettos of Kawempe, where he picked up different vices. He was so taken up by the street life that he started stealing people’s property.
On this particular day, he was caught and rounded up by the mob. They almost beat him up, only to be saved by a stranger who pleaded for his life. He had noticed his hard work at different sites despite his young age.
“There came a guy from nowhere; I do not even remember his face. He told me I was just a kid and very hardworking because he had seen me working as a porter on sites. He reasoned that I was just a teenager and advised them to either beat me alongside him or take me to the police, he revealed.

Out of pity, they forgave him because they had recovered everything that he had stolen. Dokta Brain was taken to Naguru and remanded to home, where juveniles are convicted. This was when he learned about songwriting and thought about doing it as a serious business.
“I do not know what was on my mind because I was so hardworking, just as I am in the industry now. I have the same ethics at every job that I’m given. Somehow, my soul was going through an earthly hell, and it was dragging me down. At Naguru, I learnt about songwriting. I used to think every artist wrote their own music. I got to know that it was a job,” he said.
The incident happened in 2013 while Dokta Brain was in senior two. He dropped out of school and started songwriting to help earn a living, pay producers, and also shoot videos.
