United States has cancelled its diplomatic observation of Uganda’s January 14 elections “due to the decision by the Electoral Commission of Uganda to deny more than 75 percent of the U.S. election observer accreditations requested.” The U.S. envoy, Natalie Brown, said “With only 15 accreditations approved, it is not possible for the United States to meaningfully observe the conduct of Uganda’s elections at polling sites across the country.” The development comes just a day before the general elections. President Yoweri Museveni has appealed to supporters of his ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) to reach out to the party in case they encounter any violence or intimidation ahead of and during Thursday’s presidential and parliamentary elections. President Museveni revealed in a statement that he had received information that some NRM supporters were being targeted and threatened in order to dissuade them from casting their vote. Facebook and its sister company Instagram has Saturday morning deactivated various accounts of Ugandans natable among which are Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s, blogger Ashburg Kato, presidential spokesperson Don Wanyama and ICT Ministry official, Duncan Abigaba among others. The two U.S.-owned accounts, which boast about 3 million users in Uganda, on Friday night deleted accounts of more than 100 users, some of whom are supporters of the NRM government. Police have said they will enforce the Electoral Commission (EC) directive restricting voters from staying around the polling station to monitor vote counts. “There should not be mass assemblies around polling centres according to the EC,” said the Deputy Police spokesperson, Maj Gen Paul Loketch. “You need to vote and go home. Any act of hooliganism around the polling stations will be dealt with,” he added. Ugandan human rights lawyer Nicholas Opiyo has reportedly been arrested by security. Opiyo is said to have been arrested from Kamwokya in Kampala and driven to an unknown destination. Grounds for the arrest were yet to be established as security agencies had not yet commented on the matter. However, his family members were quoted by media, confirming the arrest. These also revealed that they believed Opiyo was arrested by officers from the Chieftaincy of the Military Intelligence. Police spokespersons had not response to our requests for comments.
The Tooro Kingdom has intensified its efforts to conserve the environment under its ‘Save River Mpanga’ campaign. The Save River Mpanga campaign involves clean-up activities to physically remove plastic waste from River Mpanga, and to mobilise and sensitise the community about the dangers of irresponsible waste management.
