Police in Mukono are investigating an accident that happened on Lake Victoria in which two people died after a boat they were aboard capsized.

According to police, the accident happened on Sunday at about 8 pm in Mpatta sub-county Mawotto landing site.

“It is alleged that the boat carrying matooke, cassava and five people was sailing from Luziru on Koome Island Lake Victoria waters coming to Mawotto landing site.

However, along the way to Mawotto, it capsized and two people drowned while three were rescued,” KMP deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire said in a statement released on Tuesday.

Police have so far identified the deceased, whose bodies have since been retrieved, as Kenneth and Martin, and the survivors; Bosco, Bwire and Kalimbwe.

Although the police retrieved the bodies on Monday, it has been established that they are still stuck with them at Kawolo hospital mortuary as their full particulars including places of aboard have not yet been established.

Police reports have on several times attributed the accidents on Uganda’s water bodies to overloading, use of poor conditioned boats, weather among others.
