Entebbe International claimed victory at the 13th Annual Uganda sports press Association Road safety campaign football tourney. Entebbe International beat Standard Chartered Bank 1-0 to claim victory.
The tournament was comprised of four teams Entebbe International, City Tyres, Standard Chartered Bank and Uganda Sports Press Association Journalists. Entebbe International beat USPA 2-0 while Standard Chartered Bank beat city Tyres 14-13 on penalties after the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
In his remarks Mark Namanya the USPA boss said that the annual USPA Road safety campaign football Tournament is in remembrance of four sports journalists who died in 2001 in a road accident in Lugazi when they were coming from a Nile Breweries Press conference. Simon peter Ekarot, Deo Kabunga, Batte Junior and Kenneth Matovu all perished.
“This tournament is about humanity and we champion road safety as sports Journalists” Namanya said.
Namanya added that the annual football tournament was played under the theme: USE FULL BEAM RESPONSIBLY to highlight the importance of road safety and to call upon all road users to drive responsibly. Several Zebra crossings in Entebbe Town were painted to mark the event.
The LC3 Chairman Mr. Kasule Wasswa David thanked USPA for choosing Entebbe to host the 13th annual sports Tournament; he apologized for the mayor’s absence who wasn’t able to attend due to other engagements.
Mr. Kasule also appealed to USPA to join the campaign to ensure that play grounds in Uganda are regained. Mr. Kasule said that the country is losing so many play grounds to investors and many have a very bad playing surface.
“We are losing a lot of playing grounds to investors and most football pitches have a very bad playing surface. I appeal to USPA to advocate for the sustainability of the pitches” he stated.
Mr. Kasule was happy to note that Entebbe Municipal Council had surveyed all playing grounds in Entebbe.
The event sponsors SN Brussels , City Tyres and Standard Chartered Bank all pledged to continue their partnership with USPA to promote road safety awareness in Uganda.
