
The 3rd National Deaf Cup Soccer Championship 2015 came to a conclusion on Saturday with Bright Stars being crowned Champions. They beat Kampala DFC 3-1 in the finals to claim victory at the three day tournament that began on Thursday at the Wax and Police Grounds. Kelvin Matukya’s superb header gave Bright Stars an early lead in the first half. Kampala DFC managed to grab an equalizer in the second half but there smiles were cut short after Bright stars quickly added two more goals through Allan Mugumbya to seal their victory. Both teams received a trophy and medals as winners and runners up respectively.
Kampala DFC advanced to the finals after knocking out 2014 champions Sun City 4-1 in the semifinals while Bright Stars knocked out Entebbe 3-2 on penalties after a goalless draw.

Individual accolades were awarded to Kampala’s Moses Mushabe who emerged as tournament’s top scorer with 8 goals while 22 year old Somali National Yahya Abdirahman emerged as tournament’s overall best player, he too received an accolade. All the Nine teams that took part in the Championship received certificates of participation and a cash prize of Shs 50,000 from tournament sponsor and aspiring Member of Parliament People with Disabilities (PWD’s) Central region Eng. Mayanja Sulaiman.
“Many times our communities have neglected us but through activities like sports we come together and prove to the world that we have a positive role to play and we can accomplish many tasks if given a chance” Mayanja said.

He thanked all the nine participating teams and urged them to be confident and courageous in order to pursue their dreams.
“I’m grateful that Bright Stars has won the tournament though there were some challenges in the preparation stage. The deaf are peaceful people though most people think they are always angry” Bright Stars Coach Bart Kiyemba Muhammad told entebbenews.

“The deaf are obedient people and they value friendship. They also respect people and they also deserve to be respected and not treated as outcasts” Kiyemba addedKiyemba who has been coaching Bright Stars for the last 6 months revealed that People with Disabilities (PWD’s) aren’t well catered for and called on all well wishers for support.
