Team Special Forces Command (SFC) sailed to victory at the Inaugural Easter Usalama Boxing Championship held at the lake side Marine 10 Special Forces command base in Entebbe on Easter Monday. Team SFC returned a total of five points to emerge as overall winners of the inaugural tournament.
Team Uganda Police Force (UPF) returned a total of 3 points to finish second while Team Uganda Prisons Services and Uganda Peoples Defence forces (UPDF) finished third and fourth with two points and one point respectively. The tournament attracted 22 participating boxers in the Bantam weight (56 kgs), Light Weight (60 and 64 kgs), Welter weight (69kgs), light feather weight (49kgs), middle (75kgs) and light heavy weight (81kgs). In a special contest SFC’s Busingye Champion knocked out Asiku Abdul from the Uganda Police Force. All participants received certificates of participation.
Uganda Olympic Committee president William Blick, retired boxer and Kampala Central Councilor Amooti Nyakaana, Entebbe Mayor Kayanja Vincent DePaul all graced the event.
Lt.Col. Dons Nabaasa who represented Muhoozi Kainerugaba reiterated the importance of sports in promoting, nurturing talent and fostering cooperation among the different armed forces and the community.
In his remarks Guest of Honor and Chief of Staff Uganda Peoples Defence Airforce (UPDAF) Col. James Birungi thanked the Special Forces command for initiating and organizing the tournament.
“I would like to thank the commander Special Forces Brig. Muhoozi Kainerugaba and his team for initiating and organizing the tournament. Apart from entertaining and bringing us together the tournament has improved our sports capacity and I believe the sky is the limit for Uganda” Col. Birungi said.
He also appealed to Ugandans to be concerned about their health by engaging in physical fitness exercises.
William Blick Speaks.
In his remarks Uganda Olympic committee President William Blick offered to sponsor one coach from the Special Forces Command (SFC) to attain an internationally recognized Boxing certificate. He also called on the sports fraternity in the defence forces to enroll for capacity building courses in organizational sports management.
“The Uganda Olympic committee (UOC) will train all army officers who are interested in acquiring knowledge in Organizational sports management at diploma level and thereafter we shall work out a plan to offer degrees in organizational sports management” Blick confirmed.
He also praised Brig. Muhoozi Kainerugaba for sponsoring the Uganda Olympic committee with an electronic server that will host the different sports websites in the armed forces.
“The UOC will sponsor all armed forces to access information from our electronic library about sports management that we have created” Blick confirmed.
