Police in Kampala have in custody a senior city pastor on allegations that he raped a 14-year-old girl under the pretext of praying for her.
According to the case file at Katwe Police Station, the pastor (names withheld) from Latter Glory Church in Namasuba, Kikajjo, took advantage of the girl while her brother, who is her benefactor, was in prison.
The pastor, 42, reportedly went to the girl’s home to pray for her so that the brother could be released but ended up raping her.
The deputy spokesman of Kampala Metropolitan Police, Luke Owoyesigyire, said a medical examination confirmed that the girl was sexually assaulted.
“I have been informed that the detectives are to submit the case file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to guide us on the way forward,” Owoyesigyire said in an interview.
The girl’s brother, who has since been released from prison, said he had trusted the pastor when he was in prison.
“When I was in jail, he visited my home to pray for my family in the trying moment. He used that opportunity to defile my sister,” he said on Thursday.
He said the girl was so traumatised that she even ran away from home and didn’t want to go back to school.
“But what is shocking us right now is that the suspect’s friends and fellow pastors are putting pressure on the police to release him despite the presidential directive on not granting police bond to those accused of defilement,” he said.
