Unlike in the previous four editions where the Rotary cancer run has been held in Kampala, this time round the Run will be held concurrently on Sunday August 28 in 16 districts across Uganda including Entebbe Municipality. In Entebbe Municipality the cancer run will be held at the Works Grounds starting 7am under the theme; Run For Hope. For those willing to participate in the noble cause will have to part with UGX 20,000 as Registration fee and the proceeds will go to procuring a linear Accelerator Cancer Machine that will be stationed at Nsambya Hospital.
The race categories include 5kms, 10kms and 21kms and beginning Friday August 26 – Saturday August 27 there will be free cancer screening at the Works Ground all courtesy of Centenary Bank who are sponsoring the entire cancer run to a tune of UGX 110 Million.
According to Lydia Bujara the Chairman Rotary Cancer Run 2016 Rotary Uganda is seeking over USD 4 million to procure the much needed linear Accelerator Cancer Machine for Nsambya Hospital and constructing a bunker where the machine will be stationed.
Meanwhile the Entebbe Municipality Member of Parliament Hon. Rose Tumusiime who was Chief Guest at the official launch of the Entebbe cancer Run that was held on Saturday at the Mayor’s Gardens lauded Rotary Uganda for their initiative and promised to support the noble cause.
I’m very passionate about fighting cancer because I’ve an emotional perspective towards the life threatening disease. The disease has claimed the lives of my brother, sister and my husband who succumbed to cancer of the colon in 2013. I thank Rotary Club for their initiative because Cancer is an expensive disease to treat, Hon. Tumusiime said.
Hon. Tumusiime called on the public to look out for ways and means of preventing the disease through living a healthy lifestyle.
Some of the cancer diseases are caused through over consumption of Alcohol, smoking and consuming a lot of Junk food (Chicken, Chips, Chaps and other fried food stuffs). As government our target is to attain a Middle income status by 2020 and we cannot achieve that goal if we have an unhealthy population, Hon. Tumusiime stressed.
Other districts that will be holding the Rotary cancer run include Kampala, Masaka, Arua, Jinja, Iganga, Tororo, Kasese, Hoima, Kyenjojo, Mbarara, Kabale, Kihihi, Masindi, Bushenyi and Lira.
