For the first time in history, Uganda through Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) hosted the first ever Global Aeronautical Information Management (AIM) 2017 conference on the African continent in a bid to fast track the transition from Aeronautical Information service (AIS) to Aeronautical Information Management (AIM) under the theme; “NO AIS IS LEFT BEHIND”.
Addressing a total of 61 member delegates that converged at the Serena Hotel on Tuesday for the three day conference, Roberta Luccioli, the ICAO Montreal representative stated that the ultimate objective of the AIM is to provide users with information they can trust adding that this can only happen only if the information reflects the perspective of the data provider, the perspective of the data consumer and complies with the agreed quality standards.
ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) is pleased to participate in this important event under the theme; “NO AIS IS LEFT BEHIND” and in full partnership with IFAIMA we shall help contribute to the cooperative global efforts to be proactive and aligned to the implementation process, procedures and systems that allow the provision of quality assured, relevant and mutually understood aeronautical information in an interoperable manner, Roberta Luccioli stated.
Luccioli added;
I am happy to announce that the preliminary review of the proposed complete restructuring of Annex 15, the backbone of the AIM framework, has been completed by ICAO with success to accommodate the transition from AIS to AIM; the proposed amendment was thoroughly analyzed and very much welcomed by our technical governing body, the Air Navigation commission, this amendment was considered an important milestone in the successful evolution to AIM environments.
In her remarks, Works Minister Hon. Eng. Monica Ntege commended Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) for being the first Aviation institution to host the conference on the African Continent and called on the delegates to ensure that all the users of the airspace get sufficient and timely information on air Navigation facilities and services for safe, secure and efficient flights.
I would like to thank the International Federation of Aeronautical Information Management (IFAIMA) for considering Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and the Uganda Aeronautical Information Service officer’s Association (UGAISOA) as worthy hosting partners. The ultimate objective is for the states’ Aeronautical Information Service (AIS) to provide information that can facilitate safe conduct of flights, Minister Monica Ntege said.
She added
The presence of ICAO and other International bodies will play a leadership role in providing guidance to tackle challenges facing the profession. Uganda is committed to partnering with and supporting ICAO and IFAIMA in these efforts.
Meanwhile Eng. Mike Ndawula, the CAA Board Chairman revealed that as a result of the transition, Uganda’s airspace users now enjoy the convenience to perform flight planning, self briefing and access to electronic information publications using any web enabled device.
