At 5:00 pm on Thursday, Vincent Kimbugwe Kasana, was at his rented apartment in Lungujja, Kampala, when he received a telephone call.
“Where are you?” the stranger called.
“I am home,” Kimbugwe, who contested on an independent ticket for Mawogola South MP seat in the 2016 elections, responded.
“Can you come and we meet at the Sheraton Hotel?” asked the caller.
“No, I can’t come back to town (Kampala city centre). I am from town,” said Kimbugwe,
The caller, who was speaking Runyankore, insisted that Kimbugwe return to town since he (caller) would be busy on Friday.
Kimbugwe jumped on a boda boda and rushed to town.
According to family members, Kimbugwe was active on his WhatsApp until 8:00pm.
Thereafter, his phone went off. He was unreachable.
On Friday morning, a boda boda rider found Kimbugwe dumped along the Northern bypass. The political activist was unconscious.
The boda rider called the police who picked Kimbugwe and rushed him to Mulago National Referral Hospital.
“Kimbugwe was in a terrible state after being beaten,” said George Mutabazi, a close friend.
Back home, Kimbugwe’s wife started a frantic search for her missing husband.
A case of a missing person was registered at Old Kampala Police Station.
On checking, detectives discovered that Kimbugwe had passed on at 4:00am on Saturday at Mulago hospital.
“Kimbugwe died of internal bleeding,” said Mutabazi, the former Lwengo district chairperson. “He got a concussion caused by a blow to his head.”
Mutabazi said Kimbugwe was a very active mobiliser of Gen Muhoozi.
In his community, Kimbugwe was mobilizing for Muhoozi’s anticipated 2026 presidential bid.
“Kimbugwe was a strong supporter of Muhoozi,” said Mutabazi.
A Police investigation will determine if Kimbugwe’s murder had anything to do with his political activism.
Mutabazi said Kimbugwe will be laid to rest on Monday in Sembabule district.
