Residents of Kitubuulu zone in Entebbe Municipality are having sleepless nights ever since the rainy season started a few weeks ago. On Monday the poor residents kissed death after the heavy torrential rains caused excessive floods and landslides. The land slide occurred in the wee hours of Monday Morning while the locals where snoring. There were no fatalities when the incident happened however a few kiosks and banana Plantation were washed away by the deadly land slide. Some residents who spoke on condition of anonymity pointed fingers at illegal sand miners for degrading the land and making it susceptible to floods. The locals also pinned down National Forestry Authority (NFA) for turning a blind eye and pocketing bribes from the illegal sand miners to allow them continue with their environmental destruction. For the last couple of years the illegal sand miners have been illegally mining sand from the area without minding about the environmental concerns.

Sources at Entebbe police Station also pinned National Forestry Authority (NFA) and the locals over turning a blind eye. Several sources also pointed fingers at the locals for turning a blind eye over the matter because their sons have been directly engaging and benefiting from the illegal sand mining. National Forestry Authority officials weren’t available for comment.
