Africa’s largest mobile operator MTN says it is reviewing allegations that it paid protection money to militant Islamist groups in Afghanistan. The allegations, made in a legal complaint filed in a US federal court on Friday, say the firm violated US anti-terrorism laws. It was filed on behalf of families of US citizens killed in attacks in Afghanistan. Five other companies were also named in the filing. The complaint alleges MTN paid bribes to al-Qaida and the Taliban to avoid having to invest in in expensive security for their transmission towers. A Sudanese court on Monday sentenced 29 intelligence agents to death for killing a teacher in detention during protests against Omar al-Bashir, Sudan’s longtime former leader, earlier this year. The defendants were found guilty of deadly abuse against Ahmed al-Kheir at an intelligence services facility and sentenced to be hanged, judge Sadok Abdelrahman said. The teacher was beaten and tortured to death after he was arrested in late January by intelligence operatives in Sudan’s eastern province of Kassala, the judge said.
