In a significant show of opposition solidarity ahead of the Uganda 2026 elections, detained veteran leader Dr. Kizza Besigye has delivered a financial boost to Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, for his presidential campaign.

The contribution was delivered by Besigye’s wife, Winnie Byanyima, during a high-profile prayer meeting held on Sunday at their residence in Kasangati. The event, organized to pray for political prisoners and the country’s future, brought together top opposition figures, activists, and religious leaders.

A “Last Push” for the Bobi Wine Campaign

While the exact amount of the donation remains undisclosed, the gesture is being hailed as a pivotal moment for the National Unity Platform (NUP) as the election enters its final, high-stakes week.

Addressing the gathering, Byanyima conveyed a personal message from Besigye to Bobi Wine:

“Besigye sent me to give you this money to be your last push as you wind up the campaigns. Let it help you reach your goal.”

The announcement was met with thunderous applause, signaling a bridge between the “old guard” of the opposition and the “new generation” led by Kyagulanyi.

    Solidarity Amidst Detention

Dr. Kizza Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate, remains a central figure in Ugandan politics despite his current detention. His supporters argue that his continued involvement—even from behind bars—demonstrates an unbreakable resolve against the current administration.

Bobi Wine expressed his deep gratitude for the support, noting that the contribution serves as both a financial boost and a massive moral encouragement at a critical juncture in his bid for the presidency.

The Road to January 15: Key Election Highlights

As the January 15 polls approach, the political climate in Uganda is intensifying. Recent developments include:

    • UPDF Deployment: Increased military and police patrols in Kampala and major towns to ensure “security.”

    • NUP Abductions: Claims by the National Unity Platform regarding the missing status of their chief mobilizer.

    • Campaign Promises: Bobi Wine’s focus on better service delivery and urging voters to “guard the ballot.”

Why This Matters for the 2026 Elections

Political analysts suggest that Besigye’s financial and symbolic backing of Bobi Wine could consolidate the opposition vote. For years, critics have pointed to divisions within the opposition as a weakness; however, this “Kasangati Declaration” of support suggests a unified front heading into Thursday’s vote.

With only days to go, all eyes are on the Electoral Commission and the heavy security presence across the country.
