Focus will be on strengthening ties between the Uganda and Kenya rugby communities when the second edition of the rugby legends touring game is played today at 4 p.m. at King’s Park Arena, Bweyogerere. The game will be the first leg of this year’s outing, with the return leg set for September 28 in Nairobi, Kenya.
Kenya won the first edition across two legs and will look to retain the title, having arrived in the country earlier in the week and held their captain’s run yesterday ahead of the much-anticipated tie.
The Oscar Osir-coached Kenya legends side features several veterans, including Humphrey Kayange, Collins Njera, captain Eddie Omondi, and Lavin Asego among other players that make up the 25-man squad.
Uganda’s 32-player roster is captained by veteran hooker Alex Mubiru and features some of Uganda’s best talents to ever grace the game. Uganda rugby legends flyhalf Brian Tabaruka says the tournament is aimed at uplifting the level of rugby in the region.
“We are focused on how we can further impact rugby in Kampala and beyond, and we are looking at how we can have some upcountry tours and connect with the communities to support the growth of the game across the country,” Tabaruka stated.
While Kenya were 38-6 winners at Kyadondo in the first leg last year, Uganda will look to capitalize on home advantage this time around. Both teams have been in training over the last couple of months in the build-up to the tournament and have also been involved in various community-focused programs ahead of the tie.
