Lillian Zawedde, William Osire and Jeff Kayongo (Jr) who departed yesterday aboard Ethiopian Airlines flight no. ET333 for Singapore are upbeat to represent Uganda in the 15th Singapore Open Wood ball championship that will be getting underway today. After the three day tournament that will climax on August 2, the trio will travel to Malaysia for the 18th Malaysia Open Wood ball Championship scheduled to start on August 4 – August 9, 2015.
This will be Zawedde Lillian’s 2nd time at both events having won double Bronze in Singapore and a Gate-In One Gold in Malaysia when she last competed in 2013. She is Uganda’s first internationally ranked Woodball player in 27th position for 2014. She is currently ranked 33rdwith 29.0 points after finishing 12th in Hong Kong and 23rd in Thailand earlier this year.
Kayongo Jeff Gracious will compete in the Youth events at both Championships. He attained Gold at the 2nd Entebbe Schools Championship held earlier this year at Lake Victoria School but didn’t perform well at the 6th ICPAU Juniors Woodball Championship where he finished 29thoverall.
Osire William was 1st Runners-Up at last year’s Corporate Woodball Circuit and is currently ranked 5th in the 2015 season.
Besides the singles events, he will pair up with Lillian for the Mixed Doubles at both championships. The players are sponsored by Ndejje University, Bank of Uganda and Entebbe Junior School. The team was seen off at Entebbe International Airport by Woodball General Secretary Joseph Collins Ssemanda yesterday and Jeff Kayongo (Sr) dad to Jeff Kayongo (Jr)
Mean while Jeff Kayongo (Sr) lauded aspiring Member of Parliament Entebbe Municipality Fabrice Rulinda who contributed USD200 towards Jeff Kayongo (Jr)’s travel expenses.
