Faruku Kirunda, the Deputy Presidential Press Secretary has bashed rumors of an impending new lockdown, which started circulating ahead of President Museveni’s anticipated address.
The rumor was reportedly started by former Presidential candidate Joseph Kabuleta, who claimed on social media that a 21-day lockdown was being mooted.
Kabuleta claimed that President Museveni and cabinet had met and agreed on extending the reopening schedule with another 21 days to contain the spread of the new Omicron variant.
He added that a section of media houses had already received money to start a covid-19 vaccination campaign today December 28.
However, Kirunda in a statement said these claims were false.
“The general public’s festive spirit should not be dampened by speculation that another lockdown is in the offing due to the surge in cases,” he said.
“Kindly ignore the rumors and wait for an informed address by H.E the President.”
President Museveni who in October, promised to fully open up the economy in January is expected to address the country this week.
He (Museveni) yesterday met the National COVID-19 Taskforce to receive a status report which will define the reopening process.
This comes amid raising cases of Covid19, with up to 745 registered on Christmas day.
