In a show of support for the national football team, the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among has delivered a UGX 50 million cash donation to the Uganda Cranes players ahead of their World Cup qualifiers against Botswana and Algeria.
The funds were handed over to goalkeeper Ismail Watenga on behalf of the squad, during the Speaker’s visit to the team’s training session at the Namboole Stadium on Tuesday evening.
The Speaker was also accompanied by FUFA President Moses Magogo, Minister of State for Sports Peter Ogwang and other government officials and FUFA delegates.
In her remarks, Anita Among emphasized that the money is to motivate the team in their upcoming World Cup qualifier matches against Botswana on June 7th and Algeria on June 10th at Namboole.
She promised additional “winning bonuses” for the team if they emerge victorious in these crucial fixtures.”This is on condition that there will be a winning bonus,” Among stated.
“We’re giving you the 50 million, but you’ll have another winning bonus” she promised, as she handed over the money in cash to Watenga. “When you win the first game, you’ll get a winning bonus, and when you win the second game you’ll get another winning bonus.”
The Speaker emphasized the government’s commitment to promoting sports in the country, saying, “We’re doing all this for this country, so play for the country as we do our best.”
She concluded by wishing the Uganda Cranes the best of luck in their upcoming matches, praying for God’s blessings upon the team.
Uganda, who are currently fourth in a six-team Group G, which also includes Algeria, Botswana, Guinea, Mozambique, and Somalia, will be aiming to finish at least second in the group to secure a spot in the final round of African qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the first time in their history.
