Foreign Affairs Minister Sam Kutesa has expressed Uganda’s concerns over reported mistreatment Ugandan citizens in China.
There have been multiple reports of Ugandans and other African nationals being targeted by Chinese, as the country where Covid19 originated, struggles to contain the virus.
The maltreatment of Africans is said to have intensified recently as China started reopening its economy for business including the City of Wuhan where the virus sprouted from.
Campaigns have since emerged on social media, calling on the government of Uganda to arrange for repatriation of its citizens stranded in China.
On Saturday, during a meeting with the Chinese Ambassador to Uganda HE Zheng Zhuquiang Minister Kutesa “conveyed the serious concern of the Government of Uganda on the harassment and mistreatment of its nationals.”
The Foreign Affairs Minister in a statement said Hon Kutesa “called on Government of China to urgently intervene and address the plight of Ugandans in China.”
On his part, Ambassador Zheng Zhuquiang assured the Minister that China values its relationship with Uganda and other African countries.
He said that the Government was taking steps to address the matter and undertook to take up the concerns of the Government of Uganda with the relevant authorities in China.
The meeting was attended by the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amb Patrick Mugoya and Uganda’s Ambassador to China, Dr Crispus Kiyonga.
