Retired Brig Gen Charles Bakahumura and Major Genera Abel Kandiho.

Kampala, Uganda | URN | Two retired UPDF Generals who previously headed military intelligence, have been arrested as investigations into alleged false intelligence and treachery widen. The detained are retired Maj Gen Abel Kandiho and retired Brig Gen Charles Bakahumura.

Both commanded the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI), now the Defence Intelligence and Security (DIS).

According to military sources, the two were picked up on Tuesday morning, less than three weeks after they officially left active service.

They were part of the 19 generals who were retired on August 20, 2026.

Kandiho was appointed CMI chief in January 2017 while serving as a Colonel, promoted to Brigadier in November 2017 in the same docket and later to Major General.

Bakahumura headed CMI from 2012 to 2017 before being appointed Chief of Logistics and Engineering, a position he held for seven years as its longest-serving chief.

The arrests are allegedly linked to an inquiry reportedly sanctioned by Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

A source familiar with the probe said more people connected to the same file are still wanted.

Their detention follows the arrest of other senior intelligence officers over alleged production of false intelligence reports, including former DIS Chief Maj Gen James Birungi, Director of Counter-Terrorism Col Peter Ahimbisibwe, and Director of Special Operations Lt Col Ephraim Byaruhanga.

Birungi and Byaruhanga have since been charged with treachery before the Court Martial and remanded to Makindye Military Police Barracks.

Birungi was arrested after appearing before a board chaired by Deputy CDF Lt Gen Samuel Okiding, instituted by Gen Kainerugaba.

By Press time, the UPDF had not issued an official statement on the arrest; when contacted, acting Defence spokesperson Col Chris Magezi’s known phone contacts were not available.

Earlier today, Gen Kainerugaba posted on his X handle that one of the “dancing Generals” had been captured, and another would follow soon, after retired generals were seen dancing at their farewell at State House.
