Uganda’s renown and first female lecturer, Joyce Mpanga, has passed on at the age of 89.
News of her death was communicated on Twitter (X).
Her family is yet to formally communicate Mpanga’s death.
In a post on X, Makerere University described the deceased as a politician, women-rights-crusader and educationist in the past six decades.
“Joyce Mpanga was one of Makerere’s illustrious female alumni. She was a woman of many firsts, including being the first female lecturer in the faculty of education at Makerere University and Gayaza High School’s first African deputy headmistress. May the joy and grace of the Almighty God, truly be the strength of her family and friends in this time of loss,” reads Makerere University’s post on X.
According to Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, Mpanga was “a trailblazer, a champion of the cause of women, an inspiration and a leader who set the bar so high in our country!“
Her deputy, Thomas Tayebwa, said Mpanga’s contribution to the emancipation of women and transformation of the country’s education sector will always be engraved in “our history.”
The Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Mathias Mpuuga, on the other hand described Mpanga as “a mentor and role model to many especially women leaders in this our motherland!”
“She encouraged many when she joined the Legislative Council (LEGCO) in 1960 as Parliament was known at the time,” Mpuuga said.
