Premier League clubs have unanimously voted to continue the use of VAR (Video Assistant Referee) in future seasons, with a commitment to implement several enhancements aimed at refining the system and improving the overall fan experience.
While VAR has already contributed to more precise officiating, clubs recognized the need for further improvements. A central focus will be maintaining a high threshold for VAR intervention to ensure consistency and minimize disruptions during games.
To address delays, the league plans to introduce Semi-Automated Offside Technology (SAOT) in the autumn of 2024. This technology aims to streamline the offside decision process, providing quicker and more consistent rulings.
Enhancing the fan experience is also a priority. Measures will include reducing delays, making in-stadium announcements following VAR decisions, and offering big screen replays of all VAR interventions where feasible.
The Premier League, in partnership with PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited), will work on implementing robust training programs for VAR officials to emphasize both speed and accuracy.
In an effort to increase transparency and communication, the league will expand its communications from the Premier League Match Centre and through broadcast programs such as “Match Officials Mic’d Up.”
Additionally, a comprehensive fan and stakeholder VAR communication campaign will be launched to clarify the role of VAR for all participants and supporters.
The introduction of Semi Automated Offside Technology set for autumn 2024, will utilize optical player tracking to place virtual offside lines more efficiently, enhancing both in-stadium and broadcast experiences for fans. The Premier League and PGMOL will also continue advocating for greater flexibility in the Laws of the Game, aiming to allow live video and audio broadcasts during VAR reviews.
