Three year old Akurut Margaret has defied her disability to walk.

It was just last month in July when three year old Akurut Margaret put her misery and disability aside and began walking. Born with disabled limbs (legs and arms), three year old Akurut Margaret’s story is a sad one filled with tears.

Akurut was dumped last year in December at Noah’s Ark home for disabled Children located in Kitubulu in Entebbe by her parents who reside in Pallisa and have never come back to visit her.

For the time Akurut has spent at Noah’s Ark home for disabled children, she has stood out among all her fellow disabled children because of her powerful and jovial smile, welcoming, friendly and loving heart and above all her resilience to defy her disability.

According to Jennifer, the Administrator, Noah’s Ark home for disabled Children, Akurut was using her buttocks to move and it was only last month when she started using her disabled limbs to walk.

“When she (Akurut) was brought to Noah’s Ark, she was using her buttocks for movements and we started teaching her how to walk using her disabled limbs. We are glad that she has learnt how to walk and she is also able to shade pictures. We draw the pictures and she shades them. She also talks very well and that’s why it is easy to communicate with her. When it comes to having meals, we put the plate on a raised box and she is able to eat, she is also able to use her mouth to pick a cup”, revealed Jennifer

“We took her (Akurut Margaret) to CORSU to seek guidance on how to fully restore her limbs but the doctors told us to let her make 7 years so as to have a successful operation to restore her limbs” Jennifer added.

Many children like Akurut Margaret who are born with disabilities are constantly ostracized by their parents, relatives and their communities and are often treated as bad omens, curses and outcasts. Akurut Margaret and her fellow disabled children at the Noah’s Ark home for disabled Children are entirely dependent on well-wishers and kindhearted people for their daily survival.
