Uganda Police have dismissed allegations that opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) was blocked from holding his campaign rally in Iganga District, saying he simply defied an agreed route.
In a statement, police explained that the National Unity Platform (NUP) president had been cleared to hold the rally but later diverted from the agreed procession plan, creating security and traffic concerns.
“The police did not block Hon. Kyagulanyi or his supporters. However, he disregarded the agreed route and attempted to access restricted areas, prompting security to intervene,” said ASP James Mubi, spokesperson for Busoga East Region.
Authorities stated that the rally eventually proceeded peacefully once order was restored. Police also urged political actors to respect coordination agreements to ensure public safety during campaign activities.
The NUP leadership, however, accused police of unfair treatment and deliberate obstruction of their mobilization efforts. Bobi Wine’s tour of Busoga sub-region has attracted massive crowds, marking one of the most vibrant phases of his nationwide mobilization drive ahead of the 2026 elections.
