Former FDC President & Opposition strongman Retired Col Dr Kizza Besigye has compared his political arch nemesis President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to God.
Besigye while responding to criticism on why his struggle has taken so long to achieve success, said such was the case with the NRM/NRA war.
The NRA struggle he said, had started decades ago in the 1960s under Museveni, who proceeded to equate to God as described in the biblical Prologue to John the Baptist.
“You know Mr Museveni is a very interesting person; he is like God. You know what they say that in the beginning there was the word and the word was God…even here in the beginning there was Museveni, and Museveni was with NRM and Museveni was the NRM,” Besigye said while appearing on NTV this morning.
“Because he says the NRM started off in 1965 as a student movement. So, from 1965 to 1986 to get to power, it took 30 years of struggle.”
While his critics have often lunged at his lack of success in toppling Museveni, Besigye said his success cannot be measured in taking power but the influence it has had on Ugandans.
“A struggle takes time,” he said. “It comes in different phases and many campaigns; it doesn’t just start and end with one campaign.”
“In the struggle, you must have a plan… what it is you want to achieve; ours has been awakening the masses and when you monitor what we have done, this wakening is being achieved.”
Following the launch of yet another campaign; the People’s Front for Transition (PFT) in October, Besigye has been tasked to account for the multiple other campaigns which yielded no results, starting from the post-2011 election Walk to Work campaign.
But in his defence this morning, Besigye said unlike the previous campaigns, the PFT is not focused on elections, “after realisation that elections by themselves will not liberate the country.”
He also accused detractors in the opposition of missing the real debate and offering no solutions of their own toward the regime change problem.
Opposition parties including Democratic Party and UPC came out and openly denounced their members who joined Besigye’s PFT, while the leading opposition party NUP completely shunned the movement.
