Agriculture Minister Frank Tumwebaze has this Monday evening survived a road accident along the Entebbe Express Highway.
Tumwebaze, whose offices are based in Entebbe, was traveling to Kampala after work when his official motorcade car was involved in an accident just after the Busega roundabout.
“We are safe despite the accident we have just gotten on the express,” said Tumwebaze in a Tweet.
“Another car driving ahead of us in an adjacent lane hit a boda boda and the boda boda person was thrown to our lane and hit at our car,” he explained.
“My driver dodged him but our other car behind hit him…” said the Minister, who previously run the Gender and ICT dockets.
Police are yet to speak out on the incident. Officials told us they were still studying the situation.
Road accidents on Entebbe Expressway have been on the rise in recent days.
Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) recently hired EGIS Road Operation S.A to provide road safety facilities, expressway lighting, security services, axle-load control/monitoring system, routine road maintenance and emergency maintenance works to ensure an appropriate level of service excellence along the expressway to the benefit of its users, at all times.
To reduce road traffic accidents, Egis was asked to provide several safety improvements like rumble strips before the toll plazas for speed control, and additional traffic signs at accident-prone points including improvements in the drainage system to avoid water puddles.
This is yet to be realized.
Tumwebaze’s driver struggled to maintain control of the car as it nearly swerved off the road.
“I thank God for saving us as our car hit the road barricades,” said the Kibale lawmaker, underscoring the seriousness of the accident.
“The victim is being rushed to hospital. We pray for his life. @PoliceUg as I called u on 999 this is at after Busega round about on entebbe expressway,” he tweeted.
