Mbale City Police are investigating circumstances under which a daylight robbery took place with a businessman losing 50 million shillings on Naboa Road.
The incident, which occurred at around 11:30.am on Monday, 30th December, 2024 has raised lots of unanswered security questions.
The victim, identified as David Ongom, a 42-year-old accounts clerk at Lumolo Trading Company, was on his way to deposit the cash at Dfcu Bank’s Mbale branch when the robbery took place.
Ongom had earlier deposited Shs42 million at the same bank and was carrying the remaining amount to complete the transaction.
According to SP Rogers Taitika, the Elgon region police spokesperson, Ongom who was riding his motorcycle along Naboa Road was attacked by an unidentified assailant who suddenly yanked him off his bike.
He says that the attacker sprayed red pepper into Ongom’s eyes, incapacitating him, before grabbing the bag containing the Shs50 million.
Taitika says that Ongom attempted to retrieve the bag but a second robber armed with a gun emerged from a parked dark blue Toyota Corolla.
The assailant shot Ongom twice in the left thigh before the pair fled the scene in the vehicle.
Ongom was taken to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital, where he is receiving treatment for his gunshot wounds.
Taitika says that Police have launched a manhunt for the suspects and are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
