Locals of Alemi village, Ayeri sub county in the northern district of Kole district on Monday got angry, attacked police officers and burnt sensitive police documents.
The chaotic incident, according to reports obtained by this investigative website, occurred when police saved three suspected cattle thieves from a mob.
It is alleged the suspects had stolen a cow belonging to a one local identified as Grace Ananga.
Police swung in action, arresting suspects and detained them at Kole Police Station on charges of theft under file number Kole CRB 130/2019.
According to police, the mob attacked Ayeri Police Post to access the suspects for mob action by lynching.
Kole police station responded and evacuated the three suspects from the police post. However, three armed police officers were deployed to reinforce and safe guard the post.
The locals were annoyed by the actions of the police for denying them access to the suspects for mob action which prompted them to attack and beat up the officers who were on guard.
They stole exhibits, set ablaze office furniture, police files and stole some properties of police officers.
Speaking to Journalists, North Kyoga Police Spokesperson ASP David Ongom said a reinforcement of more police officers fired in the air to disperse the rowdy mob.
“Unfortunately, two people were shot by stray bullets,” said Ongom.
The Injured persons were admitted at Lira Regional Referral hospital where they’re currently undergoing treatment.
Meanwhile, 13 suspects have so far been arrested to help with investigations.
“As police we do condemn this barbaric action of lawlessness and warn the general public to desist from attacking security bases and installations,” he cautioned.
”As enquiries continue, all those implicated shall be apprehended and brought to book,” he added.
