The Madrid Marathon witnessed an impressive display of athleticism on Sunday as tens of thousands of runners participated in the renowned event. Kenyan and Ethiopian athletes showcased their prowess in both the men’s and women’s races, delivering stellar performances that captivated spectators.
In the men’s race, Ethiopian runner Mitku Tafa emerged as an early frontrunner, leading the pack for a significant portion of the grueling 42-kilometer course. Despite facing challenges in the final 7 kilometers, including heat stroke and hamstring strain, Tafa demonstrated remarkable resilience and determination, securing his second career victory in a thrilling finish.
Tafa’s triumph was closely followed by compatriot Fikre Bekele and Kenyan athlete Douglas Chebii, who showcased exceptional endurance and skill throughout the race. Tafa crossed the finish line with a commendable time of 2 hours, 8 minutes, and 58 seconds, solidifying his status as one of the marathon’s standout performers.
In the women’s race, Kenyan runner Naom Jebet, the reigning champion of the 2023 Nairobi City Marathon, made her mark on the international stage with a remarkable victory in Madrid. Jebet’s commanding performance saw her lead the race solo in the final stretch, ultimately crossing the finish line with a time of 2 hours, 26 minutes, and 20 seconds.
Ethiopia’s Bontu Bekele trailed behind Jebet, finishing second in the women’s race, while fellow Ethiopian Kebene Chala secured third place, rounding out the podium. The dominance of Kenyan and Ethiopian runners underscored their exceptional talent and dedication to the sport, leaving a lasting impression on spectators and competitors alike.
