Simon Shimanya, who was the key suspect in the murder of International Hospital Kampala (IHK) nurse after confessing to have killed her wife over extramarital affairs, yesterday court sentenced him to 17 years in jail starting with the day he was arrested.
Shimanya confessed to the crime as police together with officers from the State House Anti-Corruption Unit visited the scene of the crime last month.
It is from that background that the Nabweru Chief Magistrates court decided to give him a lenient sentenced since he had pleaded guilty on his own plea.
“He is a middle aged man of 46 years with children left behind by the deceased to take care of. It is therefore not true that he cannot reform and return to take care of the children who have already lost one parent,”Amoko said.
According to the Patricia Amoko, the Nabweru Chief Magistrate said, Violet Kakai, 35, a nurse at IHK was hit several times with an axe by her husband, Simon Shimanya, a teacher by profession following a long standing domestic wrangle.
Meanwhile, the magistrate noted that Shimanya is free to appeal against the sentence in 14 days time.
The convict was arrested on August 12 from Isingiro District where he was hiding for almost two weeks after the gruesome incident on the night of August,1,2020 at the couple’s home in Bbumbu –Kiteezi, Wakiso District. where the murder incident reportedly took place on the night of August 1 this year.
However according to Shimanya who is a primary school teacher at Global Primary School in Isingiro told detectives that on the fateful day, the anger that forced him to act unlawfully was driven by the long time suspicion that his wife had a love affair with one Robert Sebuufu whom he was also arrested with.
He explained that Sebuufu dropped Kakai home and in tried to hit him(Sebuufu) the deceased intervened and he accidentally axed her to death.
