Uganda is experiencing a rise in the daily number of Covid19 cases, sparking concerns about a possible new wave of the deadly virus in the country.

Health Minister Jane Ruth Aceng announced the spike last night, comparing it to the early stages of the country’s second, and deadliest wave which peaked mid last year.

“We have started experiencing an increase in the daily number of COVID-19 cases compared to the stable trends we observed since January 2022,” she said.

“This increase is similar to the rise we faced in June 2021 when the Delta variant was prevalent.”

As of April this year, Uganda has registered over 164,000 Covid cases, and just over 3600 deaths.

Minister Aceng assured nonetheless, that the country is better placed currently to tackle a new wave of the virus without causing much disruption.

“We have no indication for travel restrictions, or lockdown in the current circumstances. We will optimize the existing control and mitigation tools at personal and community levels” she said.

“These measures include: vaccination for all individuals, wearing of face masks at all times especially for the vulnerable population and, hand washing.”
