Over Five hundred illegal fishing nets were on Thursday impounded and blazed with fire in Entebbe. The fishing nets were impounded from different landing sites including Kasenyi, Bussi, Zzinga and Bugonga land sites in an illegal fishing nets crack down operation on Lake Victoria. The one week operation was mounted and commanded by the Kigungu landing site Beach Management Unit Chairman Edward Serugunda in a campaign to save Lake Victoria from running out of fish stocks. The BMU chairman said in a heated meeting last week that Uganda Revenue Authourity is failing them in their work by accepting businessmen and women to import the ‘manyala’ fishing nets. He added that this has greatly failed them from fighting the illegal fishing nets and indiscriminative fishing on Lake Victoria. The Bugonga Beach Management Unit Chairman, Sarah Namusoke added that government has strongly put a deaf ear in the fight against the importation of poor quality fishing nets in the country. She added that these illegal fishing nets are imported into the country and sold cheaply to fishermen.
