Former parliamentary aspirant Patience Mubangizi is contesting again for the same seat she lost in the previous elections in Entebbe.
The staunch NRM party supporter also former LC5 district councilor has bounced back into the political spotlight to contest for the parliamentary seat currently occupied by the current Member of Parliament Rosemary Tumusiime Bikaako. Mubangizi’s political history reveals that in 2010, she contested against other candidates including Muhammad Kawuma (DP)Amon Reeves Muzoora(RIP), Christopher Sebuliba, Charles Kirumira and Sumaya Nakanwagi. She lost the parliamentary race that saw Muhammad Kawuma walk to parliament.
It’s wasn’t a smooth walk for Muhammah Kawuma after Mubangizi contesting his win to parliament. The National Resistance Movement suffered one of the biggest losses in the entire elections, which saw the opposition occupying the major seats. Mubangizi dragged Muhammad Kawuma and electoral commission to court citing massive irregularities in the election exercise.
She complained that the failure to comply with the electoral laws affected her results. She argued that the Electoral commission failed to collect ascertain and tally results from 18polling stations in the municipality out of the 74polling centers.
The High Court in Kampala presided over by judge Andrew Bashaija in August 2011 ruled that Kawuma’s election flouted the electoral laws and ordered a fresh election. Kawuma had garnered 10,812 votes against Mubangizi’s 8,973. Bashaija noted that 8,224 votes were not included in the final tally, reasoning that this had substantial impact on the final results.
In the subsequent by-election, Kawuma’s victory margin improved while Mubangizi declined thus conceding the loss. He garnered 13,727 while Mubangizi got 6,226. William Wilberforce Seryazi got 209, and Hawah Nakibuule managed only 12 votes.
