The former government officer spoke tough at the World Aids Day Celebrations that were held in Nakiwogo zone Entebbe Municipality on Tuesday. He revealed that close to 1.5 million Ugandans are HIV Positive and over 850,000 are on Anti-Retroviral treatment (ARVs). He however noted that men are adamant and don’t want to test for the deadly virus. He called on those battling the killer disease to swallow their medicine and continue preaching the prevention message. The retired senior government officer called for behavioral change and urged the public to desist from reckless sex in addition to embracing safe male circumcision.
Meanwhile Entebbe Municipality Mayor Vincent Kayanja DePaul cautioned the public to be mindful about their health and learn to go for medical check-ups.
The Alliance of Mayors and Municipal Leaders on HIV/AIDS (AMMICALL) introduced a new initiative dubbed the ’90 90 90’ campaign geared towards combating the deadly disease in city centers and is spearheaded by the mayors. The first 90 percent is aimed at letting people with HIV know their status, the second 90 percent is aimed at having all those living with HIV put on treatment and third 90 percent is aimed at reducing the viral load to zero to reduce further infection.
Several activities were held to mark the day including a procession around Entebbe, HIV Testing and counseling, safe male circumcision, cancer testing and exhibition.
