The World Health Organisation has warned that the coronavirus pandemic could overwhelm already strained public health systems in Africa. Despite considerable investments in the past five months, Africa’s healthcare infrastructure remains gravely inadequate. The average doctor to patient ratio of 1:5,000 is still far short of the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommended proportion of 1:1,000. Toyota Uganda has temporarily sealed off its Kampala branch with effect from yesterday after three of their staff tested positive for Covid-19. Mr Mahmood Omar, the company’s managing director in a press statement, said last week some of the staff at the branch reported feeling unwell with mild flu like symptoms and the company requested that they be tested. The president of the National Unity Platform, Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine has condemned police and the military for blocking him from appearing on Bugisu Cooperative Union radio in Mbale town on Saturday. A whistleblower has petitioned the Inspector General of Government asking the ombudsman to investigate whether the Shs 146 billion that was advanced to Kiira Motors Corporation by government was put to its intended use. The petitioner, in a document dated August 4, claims that the money was misused and now wants a wide-ranging investigation into the matter. Kiira Motors Corporation is a state owned enterprise established to manufacture electric powered automobiles. Government owns 96% shareholding and Makerere University owns the remaining 4%.
