Beginning early next year the Government will close all unsafe work places; this is according to the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Gender, Labour and social development Pius Bigirimana.
Bigirimana who was addressing a press conference on Friday November 14, issued a tough warning that Government would intensify monitoring, supervision and enforcement of all work places all over the country and those that don’t comply with the occupational Safety and Health Act, No.9 of 2006 will be closed.
“Don’t be surprised to hear that Government has closed down some factories, construction sites and other places of work found unsafe beginning January Next year” Bigirimina told the press conference.
“We have therefore set December 31, 2014 as the deadline for all employers to comply with the safety and health guidelines and any business that will not comply with the guidelines will be closed. Technical officers from within the occupational safety and health department are available for any advice and compliancy requirements” Bigirimana stressed.
He added that Government would consider contracting out the enforcement services to private enterprises to help enforce the guidelines and crack down all non-compliant businesses all over the country.
