Police have arrested NUPs Kassanda County South MP Hon Frank Kabuye following the murder of a student at Makerere University during a students’ guild rally.
Hon Kabuye was arrested along with one Allan Ssekidde and Kabuurwa Muzafaru
The MP, who is also the Shadow Minister for Youth and Children Affairs was arrested last evening and is detained at CPS Kampala while the other two are held at Wandegeya and Old Kampala Police Stations respectively.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman Luke Owoyesigire says Hon Kabuye was arrested because he was leading the NUP team which attacked and murdered the student.
The deceased is 27-year-old Betungura Bewotti, who was a law student at Uganda Christian University Kampala Campus.
He was residing in Makerere Kikoni and yesterday had come to join in the campaigning for the FDC candidate Justus Tukamushaba
In the evening hours as the guild candidates held their final rallies ahead of the election, the FDC and NUP camps clashed at the Makerere Rugby ground, as the former tried to force their way into the venue which was occupied by the latter.
In the scuffle that ensued, Betungura was stabbed in the neck with a broken bottle by a yet to be identified student.
He was rushed to Nsibirwa Hall for first aid treatment but he passed away after being delivered to the University Hospital.
“The Police were informed and upon reaching the scene we found blood stains believed to be for the deceased inside Nsibirwa Hall where he hid there after the scuffle that led to his stabbing” Owoyesigire said.
“Efforts are underway to have other suspects traced…The body of the deceased was conveyed to city mortuary Mulago for Post-mortem from Makerere hospital where he succumbed to the wound.”
Following the incident, Makerere University Council last night suspended the Guild elections and the entire guild office indefinitely.
The Council and the university leadership is expected to hold an emergency meeting today to take further actions on the matter.
