    Police Officer Arrested for Raping Female Suspect

    Police in Rukiga have arrested one of their own officers for allegedly raping a 28-year-old female suspect.

    Elly Maate the Kigezi Regional Police spokesman identifies the policeman as PC Muhumuza Venerato, 56, who is attached to Kashambya Police Station.

    The victim as is a resident of Nyarubisi cell in Kashambya Sub county.

    Maate says on Monday night, Muhumuza went and picked the female suspect from the cell and took her to his room where he allegedly raped her. He reportedly convinced the woman that he would help release her from custody.

    The woman had been arrested for allegedly stealing Shs 1 million and a mobile phone.

    “After the woman disappeared from her cell, the in- charge D/C Ampeire Asaph thought she had escaped, only to learn later that she was in a colleague’s room,” Maate said.

    Maate says that DC Ampeire notified CPS Rukiga and a team lead by the district CID officer responded and found both the victim and the suspect locked in the house.

    The police officer Muhumuza was arrested and detained at Rukiga CPS and will be charged with rape and Agravated Trafficking in persons under file CRB 027/2022.
