The passing of the Copyright bill into law came with a lot of controversy. While some artists celebrated the huge milestone and the fact that they would start earning from their craft, others, like Azawi, came up with different opinions.
The Swangz Avenue singer, through her social media platforms, gave TV stations, radios, bars, among others, the rights to use her music free of charge, raising questions among netizens and music lovers alike.
Ykee Benda, while speaking in a recent interview, was tasked to give his view about Azawi’s take, and was so quick to water down her claims, saying she was simply looking for attention. He noted that Azawi’s music belonged to the Swangz Avenue label, which owned legal rights to the original recording, which allows the owner to control its use, distribution, and monetization.
“Swangz owns Azawi’s music, and they have not come out to say that. If I sign with a musician, the masters belong to me,” Ykee Benda said.

Describing the music industry as a showbiz business, Ykee Benda revealed that Azawi was looking for a way to trend following the viral news of the president assenting to the law.

“We are in the showbiz business, and you realize it became trendy and everyone is talking about the signature because Musuuza posted it. With this, some looked for ways to use this to make news. I do not even blame her because she understood the business and looked for ways to get attention,” Ykee said.
