The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), has successfully conducted a Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) outreach in the recently liberated town of Mubarak.
The mission, carried out in coordination with partner forces, provided essential humanitarian aid and medical services to residents of the Lower Shabelle region, marking a significant milestone in ongoing stabilization efforts following the town’s liberation.
Medical Aid and Relief Supplies for 300+ Households
The outreach addressed the immediate needs of a population recovering from prolonged conflict. UPDF personnel and partners distributed comprehensive assistance packages to more than 300 households, including:

Food Security: Essential food items and household supplies.

Medical Services: A temporary camp established by UPDF medics provided treatment for common illnesses and non-emergency health conditions.

Health Kits: Distribution of basic medical supplies for family use.
Strengthening the Civil-Military Bond
Brigadier General Jackson Kayanja, the Sector 1 Commander, emphasized that these CIMIC activities are vital for building trust between security forces and the local population.
“This outreach is part of our broader efforts to support stabilization in newly secured areas, enhance collaboration with local communities, and create conditions necessary for recovery,” Brig. Gen. Kayanja stated.
Strategic Partnership with the Somali National Army (SNAF)
Colonel Owinyi Akena, Battle Group 44 Commander, reaffirmed the mission’s commitment to weakening extremist groups through sustained coordination with the Somali National Army (SNAF). The event was graced by high-ranking officials, including Brigadier General Abdullahi Ciro, the Deputy Commander of the SNAF Land Forces.
The Role of AUSSOM in Regional Stability
The transition from ATMIS to AUSSOM underscores a renewed focus on consolidating security gains. By integrating humanitarian outreach with military operations, the UPDF and its international partners are ensuring that “liberation” translates into tangible improvements in the welfare of Somali citizens.
