Ugandan security forces have arrested two individuals and seized what they describe as the personal archives of the late Sudanese leader, Dr. John Garang.
The operation, which took place in Kampala, involved a joint team from intelligence and counter-terrorism units.
Officials said the recovered materials include documents and recordings believed to hold sensitive historical and political information related to Dr. Garang’s role in the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM). Garang, widely remembered as the founding father of South Sudan, died in a helicopter crash in 2005 after signing the peace deal that paved the way for South Sudan’s independence.
Authorities have not disclosed the identities of the suspects or the circumstances under which the archives were obtained. Security sources, however, suggest that the items were being kept in a private residence and may have been intended for sale or unauthorized disclosure.
Investigators are now analyzing the documents to determine their authenticity and potential impact on regional stability. The arrests highlight the enduring political and historical significance of Garang’s legacy nearly two decades after his death.
Ugandan officials emphasized that the matter is being handled with utmost sensitivity, given its cross-border implications for both Uganda and South Sudan.
