Uganda Police Force (UPF) and UPDF has conducted what it described as a “search operation” at the headquarters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) in Kavule and its office in Kamwokya.
Police cited reports of “unauthorized military drills” at the opposition party’s premises.
The police, in collaboration with other security agencies, claim the operation is a coordinated security effort to investigate alleged “illegal military training” activities.
The development comes after NUP conducted a parade where its supporters were dressed in a red uniform and berets.
In response, NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, condemned the raid, accusing the security forces of planting evidence and blocking all roads around the party offices.
“Security officials are breaking into my office after spending hours checking other offices (and perhaps planting things). They’ve blocked all roads around,” Kyagulanyi posted on social media.
The police raid followed a meeting earlier in the day where NUP hosted over 40 elders from the Teso sub-region to discuss strengthening the party’s grassroots structures.
Kyagulanyi alleged that shortly after the meeting, military operatives abducted the attendees, including elderly individuals in their 80s, and later dumped them at Wandegeya Police Station.
“This is evidence that they are panicking and in great fear of the people,” he stated, vowing legal action.
Adding to the tensions, Kyagulanyi revealed that NUP’s head of mobilization, Chairman Nyanzi Fred, was released after four days of incommunicado detention and alleged torture.
He claimed that Nyanzi had been held in the custody of the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) before being dumped near his home.
“Thank you all for raising your voices,” he said, crediting public pressure for Nyanzi’s release.
The Uganda Police Force has yet to provide details on any arrests or findings from the search, stating only that further updates on the operation’s outcome will be communicated in due course.
This latest crackdown adds to the growing tension between the Ugandan government and the opposition ahead of the 2026 general elections.
