The Ministry of Health spokesperson, Emmanuel Ainebyoona, said “Much as the  Omicron variant is believed to be less severe, the number of those getting admitted into HDU and ICU is slowly increasing.”

He said Mulago had 40 patients, out of which 28 were in HDU and 12 in ICU.

The rise in COVID-19 cases come at a time President Musveni is expected to deliver a national address on the pandemic.

Experts have advised Museveni to fully reopen the economy to allow kids return to school and struggling enterprises such as bars to resume business.

The Ministry of Health on Thursday revealed that results of COVID-19 tests done on 28 December 2021 confirmed 1,809 new cases.

Earlier on Tuesday, 1,272 cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in the country.

The cumulative confirmed cases are 139,079.

The test positivity rate which had dropped to less than 0.5% three months ago, now stands at 22 percent.

The hotspots, according to the Health Ministry statistics are Kampala, Wakiso, Kiruhurua, Luwero, Mbale and Jinja among others.

The Ministry says it has so far administered 11 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines.

“We continue to call upon you all to get vaccinated as extra protection against COVID19,” said Health Ministry Permanent Secretary, Dr Diana Atwine.
