Uganda Airlines has launched the Flight Path Sustainability Project, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at reducing bird strikes and promoting environmental sustainability around Entebbe International Airport.

The project, which aligns with the airline’s mission of ensuring safety in the skies, seeks to mitigate the risk of bird strikes by implementing strategic waste management solutions. Bird strikes pose a significant challenge to global aviation, costing the industry an estimated $1.2 billion annually.

Uganda Airlines CEO, Mrs. Jenifer Bamuturaki, emphasized the importance of addressing bird strikes, citing the airline’s own experience with 21 recorded incidents as of June 2024. “Today marks a significant milestone for Uganda Airlines as we launch the Flight Path Sustainability Project, reaffirming our commitment to aviation safety and environmental stewardship,” Bamuturaki said.

Bamuturaki further noted that the project aims to reduce bird concentrations near Entebbe International Airport by 40%, ensuring safer skies for all. “We are not just addressing safety; we are also taking a holistic approach to environmental conservation by protecting the Mabamba Bay ecosystem and promoting sustainable waste management practices,” she added.

Uganda Airlines Head of PR and Communications, Mrs. Shakila Rahim Lamar, highlighted the importance of public awareness in addressing the root causes of bird strikes. “We recognize that Spur-winged geese and other birds are drawn to improperly disposed fish waste. Our solution is to minimize this attraction through sustainable waste practices,” Lamar said.

Lamar also emphasized the project’s focus on improving sanitation in the Kigungu area, benefiting over 2,000 residents who rely on Lake Victoria for their livelihoods. “Our efforts will also focus on improving sanitation in the Kigungu area, benefiting the over 2,000 residents who rely on Lake Victoria for their livelihoods,” she said.

The Mayor of Entebbe Municipality,  Fabrice Rulinda, commended Uganda Airlines for spearheading the initiative. “I commend Uganda Airlines for spearheading the Flight Path Sustainability Project, an initiative that directly addresses critical challenges in our Municipality,” Fabrice said.

Fabrice noted that the project provides an opportunity to transform how the community manages waste, reducing bird strikes and enhancing the safety of flights. “The partnership between Uganda Airlines and our community will help reduce bird strikes, enhancing the safety of flights and protecting our local ecosystem in Mabamba Bay,” he said.

The Flight Path Sustainability Project is expected to deliver several impactful outcomes, including cleaner shores of Lake Victoria, enhanced sanitation for women in Entebbe Municipality, and increased awareness and partnerships among key stakeholders to improve aviation safety while supporting local communities.
