Kadongo Kamu legend Fred Sebatta has cautioned artists who redo his songs or make covers without his consent, saying that they will face the law.
Earlier this year, the Copyright Bill was passed, and with the presidential assent, it will normally be enforced to help creatives earn from their crafts.
With Tighter systems and methods being introduced to help collect royalties and protect the economic rights of musicians and other creatives, Sebatta has warned that they would be more penalties for those who violate the law.
Speaking to Sanyuka TV, Sebatta revealed that enforcing the law would help raise money to support the struggling legends who crafted the songs.
“But after the copyright, we have to be strict on these other artists because we want to earn from it. We are your people, if you see me suffering, you have to look for ways to revive me. This helps me too,” he said.

Sebatta, however, gave an exception to Sheebah Karungi, who redid his ‘Sam Wange’ song. He explained that during that time, he was in and out of the hospital, and his health was fragile as he was battling high blood pressure and diabetes at the same time.

It was at this point that Sheebah approached him to redo his song. Despite not disclosing whether he was paid or not, Sebatta expressed his gratitude to Sheebah for the help rendered to him, including taking him to the UNMF, where he was celebrated.
“She redid the song and made me listen to it. She asked if she should release it and I gave her a go ahead because it was good. She is one of the people who have been helping me from time to time. She was the one helping me when no one was there. She stayed with me, checked on me, kept sending me money. I do not blame anyone for redoing my songs before because they were looking for how I could earn from them while I’m still alive,” he said.
@sanyukatvug I don't blame anyone who made covers of my songs before copyright, but for those who do so after, the law will come after you. – Fred Sebata. #SanyukaMusicTaxi #SanyukaUpdates
